Peaks of the Balkans Trail
The Peaks of the Balkans Trail is a 192km (119 miles) long hiking route. Over the course of ten main trails, it circles the borders of Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. Walking the route would have been impossible a few years ago, but with a new border crossing application system in place, tackling this unique trek is no longer a problem. This iconic trail connects some of the most beautiful mountains of the no longer isolated Albania, the newly independent Kosovo and the renowned Montenegro.
This trek can be started at either of the three countries it crosses. It can take anywhere from 10-13 days to complete, all depending on your physical abilities and level of motivation. Even though the level of difficulty varies from easy to moderate, this trek definitely requires hikers to be in shape and to come prepared with the right equipment (headlamps, GPS, hiking boots, etc.). The trail is fully marked, but it is still recommended for hikers to hire a guide since the trail passed through various unpopulated areas. The local guides have been trained by GIZ and received certifications from the DAV (German Alpine Club).
